Nail Removal After Limb Lengthening
Short answer
The nail is removed once X-rays show bone union in at least 3 cortices. This can be between 8 and 18 months after surgery, on average about 12 months. It is a short procedure, usually with one night or less in hospital. Nail removal is not part of the lengthening package (USD 7,000 at our clinic), and it can also be done in your home country by another team.
Why the nail comes out
The nail did its job once the new bone is solid. Removing it lets the bone carry the full load on its own.
How we decide the timing
You send X-rays at regular intervals. When the surgeon sees union in at least 3 of the 4 cortices (bone walls), the nail can come out. Removing it earlier risks a fracture.
The procedure
• Small incisions, usually through the old scars
• General or spinal anaesthesia
• Usually one night or less in hospital
• Walking the same day or the next day, as allowed by the surgeon
Where to have it done
• In Istanbul: USD 7,000 at our clinic.
• In your home country: any orthopedic team can remove it. We send your records and implant details.
What about LON?
With LON, the external frame comes off after the lengthening phase. The internal nail stays until the bone is solid and is removed in the same way.
