How Long Will I Be Off Work After Limb Lengthening?
Short answer
• Desk or remote work: depending on your mobility and method, with a walker or crutches
• School or university: same as desk work; online study is possible during your stay
• Physical jobs: about 6 to 12 months
• Driving: with all methods except LON in the femur, as long as you feel well
• Long-haul flight: at least 15 days after surgery, with a blood-thinner injection 2 hours before the flight
Every timing is typical. The surgeon decides from your X-rays.
Planning your time
The average stay in Istanbul is about 3 months. Many patients work remotely from the hotel during the lengthening phase. Plan for a laptop, a good chair and time each day for physiotherapy.
Desk work and study
You can work at a desk as soon as you feel well and can move with a walker or crutches. Pain medication can make you tired in the first weeks, so start with short days.
Physical jobs
Jobs with standing, lifting or climbing need solid bone. Expect about 6 to 12 months, depending on your X-rays.
Driving
• PRECICE and FITBONE (femur or tibia): you can drive once you feel well and can control the pedals safely.
• LON in the tibia: possible once you feel well.
• LON in the femur: not possible while the external frame is on.
Check your insurance rules in your own country.
Flying
You can fly from 15 days after surgery. Take a blood-thinner injection 2 hours before the flight. Ask for an aisle seat and wheelchair assistance at the airport. Our team arranges the transfer to the airport.
