Femur vs Tibia Lengthening: Which Is Better for You?

Short answer

The femur (thigh bone) can usually be lengthened more, up to 8 cm, and patients often find its recovery easier. The tibia (shin bone) is usually lengthened up to 6 cm and is more demanding on the calf muscles and Achilles tendon.

For the most height, both can be lengthened in a quadrilateral plan, typically 12 to 14 cm in total.

Comparison

• Typical maximum in one stage: Femur: up to 8 cm · Tibia: up to 6 cm

• Main soft-tissue challenge: Femur: knee stiffness, hamstrings · Tibia: calf, Achilles tendon, ankle stiffness

• Walking during lengthening: Femur: usually easier · Tibia: usually harder

• Proportion effect: Femur: longer thighs · Tibia: longer lower legs

We use LON, PRECICE and FITBONE for both the femur and the tibia.

How body proportions guide the choice

Your surgeon measures your thigh-to-shin ratio and your overall body proportions. If your shins are relatively short, the tibia may give a more natural look. If your thighs are shorter, the femur may be the better choice.

FAQ

Is femur lengthening less painful than tibia?

Many patients report the tibia as harder, mainly because of calf tightness and ankle stiffness.

Can I do femur first and tibia later?

Yes. Staged lengthening is common, usually after the first bones have consolidated.

How long between femur and tibia surgeries?

We recommend about 1 year. If you prefer and your physical condition allows it, femur and tibia can be lengthened simultaneously (quadrilateral). Patients who want quadrilateral lengthening but not in one session can choose the staged approach, with the two surgeries about 3 weeks apart (additional USD 5,000 for the hospital stay). With LON, the two surgeries are done about 3 months apart, because we never place LON on the upper and lower legs at the same time due to infection and mobility risks.
